Midwife & antenatal teacher

Emily Housman is a Registered Midwife in the NHS who lives and works in England. Knowing how birth can take many different paths, she offers her services as an antenatal teacher to a help women to prepare themselves to have more satisfying and empowering experiences no matter what kind of birth they are hoping for and how it unfolds.

Supporting women to be calm, resilient and respected whilst also helping them overcome any fears and challenges they may face along the way to becoming parents is so important in todays birthing world. Imagery and visualisation has become an essential tool in her antenatal teaching because of how profoundly it can support calmer, gentler births whether vaginal or c-section.
Emily trained as a DreamBirth Practitioner with the School of Images (NYC) with teacher Claudia Rosenhouse Raiken, who has used imagery successfully in childbirth for years and has many stories from women, babies and doctors where imagery has had a positive impact. Emily is also a student of Dr Catherine Shainberg, a leading imagery world expert, who developed DreamBirth. Emily is also a Hypnobirth teacher with Hypnobirth Midwives UK .
She holds a degree in Psychology and prior to becoming a midwife she worked for many years in the field of child development and autism with families around the world. Now she lives in rural Suffolk surrounded by big trees, and works with clients in England and around the world, with courses and classes online and in-person (for local women). Her vision is to support safe, confident and intuitive birth for families, and to co-create generations of little people who are free, conscious and happy…

Testimonials

Sarah

Teacher, London

“Our imagery sessions were tailored exactly to what we needed thanks to your gentle but poignant questions which really helped me tune into my body and my babe. You listened so skilfully to me and the baby and merged your intuition with knowledge which was simply phenomenal and has definitely helped us feel positive, prepared and free from fear. I actually felt excited to experience labour!

During the actual birth I believe my partner and I were just in awe with how seamlessly you became part of this very intimate experience. Not only did you remind me of the exercise most suitable for the situation, you were like heaven sent in the difficult moments, bringing warmth, light and your kind smile. You truly made the birth of little Willow an even more beautiful event!”

Hanna

NHS Programme Manager, West Yorkshire

“Emily is a dream. She helped me immeasurably pre, during and post the birth of my second baby. She spent time with me to understand my hopes and fears surrounding my upcoming birth. She recommended and led me through several very effective visualisations (to do mainly with releasing my anxiety about not being able to focus wholly on my first child anymore, and also envisaging my perfect birth).

I went into labour not long after our final Skype session, and had the most beautiful, powerful homebirth – partly, I’m sure, because this wonderful woman had helped me to release, relax, and remember what my body was capable of. Her messages of support and advice over the following few weeks were also invaluable. Emily is extremely knowledgeable and gentle. Women, men and babies who work with her are very blessed.”

Dariya

HypnoBirth Teacher, Surrey

“I had an incredible, smooth, calm and magic home birth. A dream came true! I would not have done it without Emily. She is kind, gentle and is so intuitive and knowledgeable. To have her supporting me at my birth was the best decision and choice that I could have made!

Your birth experience will stay with you for the rest of your life and will have a huge impact not only on yours but on your baby’s life as well.”

Caroline

“I’ve been having regular Skype DreamBirth 1:1’s for the past eight months with Emily. She has supported me to overcome a number of fears relating to a still birth and instrumental birth of my son, now aged three.

I feel a sense of readiness to becoming pregnant again & look forward to continuing to work with Emily throughout my next pregnancy. Emily is professional, sensitive and incredibly skilled in her facilitation of DreamBirth. She holds a safe vessel to explore profound personal growth & change.”

What is imagery?

When we imagine something, our body responds immediately, like when we think of a sour lemon we salivate, or if we bring to mind a sad memory, we live that emotion again. Our body and mind are intrinsically linked and just imagining an event or emotion has the potential to change what neurotransmitters we produce, which hormones are activated,  how our cells function and ultimately how we behave.

When we imagine an experience we can evoke the same parts of the brain and body as if we were actually going through it. Studies show this can lead to improvements in activities & performance, so much so, that top athletes use imagery to hone their skills!

Imagery offers a way to nourish and focus the mind, body and heart. The DreamBirth® imagery exercises have been designed specifically for use in different circumstances at any point from conception to parenting. They are gentle, beautiful and effective at bringing your awareness to where you need to focus.

What does an Imagery session involve?

You simply need to be sitting comfortably and the exercises are usually done with your eyes closed. You will be guided through different specific exercises, usually just a few minutes long, and then you will get a chance to talk about what you’ve seen and be supported to repair and change your images if you wish to.  Classes are mostly taught online via live video so you can join from wherever you are! You can then start to practice exercises regularly through the following days which can help you integrate the imagery into your subconscious and create new patterns  in your thoughts, feelings and even habits.

Is imagery easy?

Yes! Some people find it comes easily straightaway, for others it becomes stronger over time. Most people find they are able to quickly use imagery and work with their own images, changing and adjusting what they see within. If you are pregnant, often the hormones can make you dream  and see more which can be helpful.

Are there exercises that my partner can use?

Yes, there are specific exercises that have been designed for partners. I often work with partner who want to be able to tune in better to their woman’s needs and optimise how they can support their family emotionally and psychologically.
